rumi don't go back to sleep

This is a powerful New Moon, with the two major configurations in our skies right now (the square between Uranus and Pluto, and the T-square of Jupiter-Neptune-Saturn-Mars ) emphasized and intertwined in profoundly transformative ways.

What’s on deck to transform in your life, and in your soul? Take a look at the wake-up calls that are sounding alarms for you right now. The first step is to wake up. Then comes facing the reality of dealing with them — if you go back to sleep, slide into denial or deception, you are more than likely to end up with some real regrets. But if you are willing to change — and you may have to do that quickly and decisively — entirely new paths to the future will open up.

The current brouhaha over the Panama Papers (and here, and here) pretty much encapsulates what the issues are, whether it’s on the international stage, the national, or the personal. From the point of view of those directly involved in the scandal, the wake-up call came in the form of the exposure of the tax-avoidance (legal but morally sketchy) and tax-evasion (illegal) strategies for a huge number of governments, businesses and wealthy individuals. The PR fallout as well as the legal backlash will be playing out for some time to come.

We are all being asked to decide for ourselves what is right, and whether we live our lives in alignment with our values. Does the proverbial might make right? Is it OK to avoid the taxes that one’s country imposes on its citizens because you can? Or is there a moral as well as legal obligation to conduct business with an eye to the good of all the country’s citizens, to conduct ourselves with an eye to the good of others around us? Do we take care of our own, or is it every individual for themselves? Is there a path that encourages individual enterprise and autonomy while ensuring a baseline standard of living for every citizen? These are crucial questions we must be asking now as resource depletion and climate change demand that we curtail our expansive way of life, and moral imperatives demand our awareness and healing actions.

The answers have to come from within each one of us, from our individual and collective soul. They are not only questions of governance and the markets, they are questions of individual choice. Do we act from a place of honesty, integrity and compassion? Do we make choices based on our core values or take the easy way out of tough situations?

If you actively seek spiritual connection, enlightened awareness, transcendent experiences, then you will inevitably be faced with situations that require courage, perseverance, compassion, and a willingness to change. Reality can bite pretty hard this month, and most of us will be faced with sudden experiences of emotional, physical, or spiritual upheaval, either up close and personal, or vicariously through our tribes, friends, and families. If we walk into those experiences with open eyes, courage, and compassionate hearts , the transformations can be profound and lasting, showing us a path ahead to a more joyful and connected life. If we cling fearfully to our old, outmoded ways of reacting and well-worn neural pathways, the transformations will be more of the two-by-four-upside-the-head kind.

The New Moon chart counsels determination and initiative. Don’t be a spectator when things need to be done that you know will make a difference. Be honest with yourself about your strengths and abilities — this is not the time for false modesty, it’s the time for skilled and thoughtful action. But also have the self-awareness and humility to know when and where you can really be of help, and when your ego is just getting in the way. There are things you can do that will create needed change in your world. Find them, and do them.

When the chart is cast for Washington, DC, and so predictive for the entire country, we can get an idea of where the action will be over the next month nationally.  (I’m going to mix in a bit of the technical stuff now. Astrologers can find the chart here.)

The New Moon is conjunct Uranus and square Pluto, re-energizing that square, and Pluto is right on the Midheaven — this is the power of governmental authority and big business. Uranus, in the 12th suggests a revolution brewing, perhaps a spiritual one, and taking action to overcome threats to freedom. We will also see pioneering spiritual journeys, openings, awakenings.

The powerful mutable T-square of Jupiter and Neptune squared by Saturn and Mars is not a peaceful one. It indicates religious violence and dogma, the unmasking of glamours, scandals, and deception. It also speaks to bringing ideals down to earth, of walking your talk, and doing the work that leads to spiritual progress.

In a mundane chart, the people of a country are represented by the Ascendant. With Mercury, unaspected, right on the Taurus Ascendant, we can expect uninhibited public discussion of money, resources and resource distribution — almost certainly spurred on by the Panama Papers.

A couple of trines illuminate the way out of this challenging chart. Saturn trines Sun, Moon and Uranus, suggesting taking actions to benefit all, disciplined actions that are well-planned with the big picture and social ramifications in mind. Can we find practical compassion? Can we plan for and accept change without getting locked into religious dogma and fear-based ideologies?

The other trine is of Jupiter to Pluto and the Midheaven, suggesting resourcefulness and the power of persistence. Stay grounded and make practical plans and assessments before pursuing your goals.
